The Newton Junction – Merrimac railway was a 7.3 kilometer single-track railway in New Hampshire and Massachusetts ( United States ). 3.5 kilometers of the route were in New Hampshire. It has been completely shut down and dismantled since 1972.

history

On May 2, 1868, the West Amesbury Branch Railroad was established. They built a branch line in Newton Junction from the Wilmington – Agamenticus line of the Boston and Maine Railroad to the small town of West Amesbury , which was later renamed Merrimac . The standard-gauge , 7.27-kilometer line was opened on January 9, 1873.

On the same day, Boston & Maine leased the West Amesbury Branch Railroad and finally acquired it in 1893. In 1972, the line, known as the Merrimac Branch , was shut down after passenger traffic had ceased in 1927.

Route description

The line branched north of Newton Junction station in a triangular track from the Boston & Maine main line and initially led to the southeast. Past Newton, where the only stopover was, the route crossed the state border to Massachusetts and shortly afterwards turned south. The terminus in Merrimac was on the eastern outskirts.
