The railway water tower in the port area of Oldenburg is located near the railway bascule bridge (address: Stau 144).
Building
The 33 m high round tower stands on a polygonal base. Plastered pilaster strips structure the brickwork of the shaft. In the fields between the pilaster strips there are windows on four sides. The steel water tank connects to the top. It has a capacity of 500 m³ and is now freely visible. Originally it was covered with plaster. A tent roof closes the structure off at the top.
Original usage
The tower was built in 1908 by the architect Köhler on behalf of the Grand Ducal Railway Directorate. It served the water supply for the steam locomotives and later supplied additional water for the hydrants at the Oldenburg main station. The water tank was not filled with drinking water, but with water from the dog . The water quality was sufficient for the purpose.
Conversion
The building stood empty for a long time until renovation and conversion work was carried out in 1992/93. Originally a pure conservation measure was planned. However, based on the designs by Karin Baatz and Andrea Geister-Herbolzheimer, an open-plan office with six open levels and a total of 220 m² of floor space was created. Several architectural offices are now based there.
