Originally known as torpedo boat destroyers, the Bainbridge-class units were the first destroyers in the United States Navy . Construction was approved by Congress in 1898 and carried out between 1899 and 1903.
The 13 destroyers were commissioned after the Spanish-American War and decommissioned in 1920. The USS Chauncey was the only ship of the class to be lost at sea. In 1917 the destroyer collided with the British steamship Rose .
Except for the USS Hopkins , which was sold to the Denton Shore Lumber Company , the ships went to Joseph G. Hitner after their decommissioning, who converted them into merchant ships or scrapped them.
There were major structural differences within the Bainbridge class, which led to the Hopkins class (DD-6 and DD-7) and the Lawrence class (DD-8 and DD-9) being used.
- The USS Hopkins and USS Hull were oil fired instead of coal firing.
- The USS Lawrence and USS Macdonough were armed with two additional six-pound guns and their funnels were closer together.
- USS Paul Johns , USS Perry and USS Preble had a twin torpedo tube instead of two single torpedo tubes.
- USS Stewart was equipped with a Seabury boiler and was the fastest and smallest destroyer in its class.
