USS Barry (DD-2)

The USS Barry (DD-2) was an American Bainbridge-class destroyer and the first ship to be named USS Barry after Commodore John Barry (1745-1803).

The Barry (Destroyer No. 2) was laid down on March 22, 1902 at Neafie and Levy, Ship and Engine Building Co. , Philadelphia , Pennsylvania. Godmother was Charlotte Adams Barnes, great-grandniece of Commodore Barry. On November 24, 1902, the ship was put into service under the command of Lieutenant NE Erwin.

The Barry was placed under the North Atlantic Fleet and took part in maneuvers off the coast of New England in the summer of 1903. In December 1903 she left the east coast and sailed through the Suez Canal to the Asian Fleet , where she arrived in April 1904.

The Barry stayed with the Asian fleet until August 1917 . On August 1, 1917, she left the Philippines and drove through the Suez Canal to Gibraltar , where she arrived on October 20. She escorted merchant ships in the Mediterranean until August 1918 . On September 5, 1918, she reached Charleston , South Carolina . She stayed there until the end of the year and performed patrol and convoy duties. On June 28, 1919, she was decommissioned in Philadelphia. It was sold on January 3, 1920 and later scrapped.
