Bakersfield (Texas)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bakersfield is an unincorporated community in Pecos County in the US state of Texas .

geography

Bakersfield is located in west Texas, ten miles south of the Pecos River and 37 miles east of Fort Stockton at the intersection of Interstate 10 and 11 Farm to Market Road.

history

The place was founded in 1929 after an oil field was discovered in the neighborhood. It was named after the founder of the settlement, JT Baker. Within a year, the necessary infrastructure to supply the oil field was built, and the population rose to just over 1000. With the fall in the price of oil in the early 1930s and the resulting reduced production, it was decided to shut down the neighboring Taylor Link oil field, and Bakersfield became largely abandoned. Many houses have simply been demolished or attempts have been made to sell them well below their value. By 1945 the number of inhabitants sank to 45. In 1976 the number of inhabitants was still 30, the same value the place reached in the 2000 census.
