Bakin (Secret Service)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Badan Koordinasi Intelijen Negara ( German  state coordination body of the secret services ), Bakin for short , was a military secret service in Indonesia until 2001 .

history

The Bakin was founded with a presidential decree by the head of state General Suharto on May 22, 1967. The secret service reported directly to President Suharto in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Head of State and Head of Cabinet. The first head of the secret service was Major General Soedirgo. The Bakin thus formed the center of the Indonesian intelligence service. Deputies were Major General Sutopo Juwono and Colonel Nicklany, the founder of the Satsus Intel special unit. In 1968 General Yoga Sugama became the new chief of the Bakin and in 1970 Brigadier General Ali Murtopo , who also became chief of the Opsus special unit belonging to the Bakin , joined as the third deputy . Opsus was under the direct control of Suharto and operated, among other places, in western New Guinea .

In addition to the Bakin, there was also the Badan Intelijen Strategis (Bais), which was subordinate to the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. With the army reform by Defense Minister and Commander-in-Chief Leonardus Benyamin Moerdani between 1983 and 1985, the Bakin was restricted in its importance and only served as a coordinating authority for the Bais. Moerdani was both head of the Bais and deputy head of the Bakin. In 1993 Moerdani lost his office and the Bais as Badan Intelijen ABRI (BIA) lost his supremacy.

In October 2000 Bakin was completely restructured and finally renamed Badan Intelijen Negara (BIN).
