Bakugan Battle Brawlers

Bakugan is a game for two to four players based on the television series Bakugan - Players of Destiny .

The manufacturer Upper Deck describes the game as a "mixture of action, skill, strategy and mental arithmetic" and explicitly compares it to the trading card game Yu Gi Oh . The manufacturer sold around 75,000 balls in Germany in the first two months.

The game is aimed at children aged six and over. By early 2009, two million copies had been sold worldwide.

Basic game materials

The main element of the game are 48 different spherical plastic figures called "Bakugan". Their shapes and colors vary. The balls each contain a magnet. If a corresponding ball rolls over the metal card belonging to the game, it pops open due to the magnetic interaction between the ball and the card.

The various cards available differ in their magnetic properties and are another essential element of the game. They exist in three categories:

  • Character cards show the game values ​​of each Bakugan ball rolling over and unfolding. The cards are each assigned to a specific Bakugan, mostly the Bakugan contained in the sales packaging.
  • Command cards show binding instructions (“command”). Both players must obey these.
  • Skill cards provide instructions that are binding for all players. Only one can be used in each game. The card does not contain any values.

Environment and sales concept

In addition to their function as game material, Bakugan balls are exchanged and collected by their owners. The resulting social interaction around possession of the ball is an essential element of the game concept.

The balls are sold individually, but also in other forms ("packs"):

  • Starter pack : three cards and three Bakugan balls, as well as instructions. Intended for beginners.
  • Booster pack : One card and one bullet.
  • Character pack : A ball, a card and a plastic figure representing the game character.
  • Battle Pack : The most extensive range. Six balls and seven cards, plus a “rare card” that is only available in this pack.
  • Deka : Bakugan balls with a diameter of 10 cm. The game function corresponds to the smaller balls. The pack includes a card and a giant Bakugan.
