The Greek Hospital Balıklı ( Turkish Özel Balıklı Rum Hastanesi , Greek Ελληνικό Νοσοκομείο Βαλουκλή ) is a private clinic in the Balıklı district of the Yedikule district in the Zeytinburnu district of the city of Istanbul , which was established by a foundation in the 18th century by the Greek municipality .

history

The Greek Hospital in Balıklı was established in 1753 as a “Yedikule Hospital” after a Ferman . The hospital itself was donated and built by the Association of Greek Grocers. The aim of the hospital was to help treat Greek plague sufferers. The hospital was probably destroyed in a fire in 1790 and rebuilt in 1793 with the help of Patriarch Neophytos VIII .

Towards the end of the 18th century, the Greek community of Constantinople built three hospitals: Balıklı Hospital, another in Galata District in 1762, and a third in Pera in 1780 . All three hospitals were under the supervision of the Ecumenical Patriarch , who was in charge of appointing the hospital administrators. 1852 built the Balıklı Hospital through a co-foundation of Patriarch Kyrill VI. an orphanage on the premises. During the 1955 Istanbul pogrom , the hospital was overcrowded with patients who had suffered rape, trauma and physical abuse. In 1991 and 1994 the hospital was restored and Turkey’s first private alcohol and drug abuse treatment clinic was established.

today

Today the Balıklı Greek Hospital caters for the entire Istanbul public. In 2011 the hospital had 39 doctors, 98 nurses as well as assistants and other staff, which together make up a total of 440 employees. It has 650 beds. The hospital now has a church that serves not only the patients but also the entire Greek Orthodox community .
