Balak (person)

Balak ( Hebrew בָּלָק), a son of Zippor, is a king of Moab mentioned in the Old Testament and in the Hebrew Bible , the Tanakh .

In the Bible

After the twelve tribes of Israel had defeated the tribes of the Amorites in a battle, Balak and ambassadors from Midian sent messengers to Pethor on the Euphrates to bring Balaam from Mesopotamia . This should curse Israel ( Num 23.21  EU ). These efforts were turned into the opposite, Balaam announced the victory of Israel.

According to the Biblical Archeology Review (September / October 1985), evidence was found that Balaam was known to the Moabites .

Possible historical evidence

A reinterpretation of the inscription on the Mescha stele found in 1868 in 2019 suggests that a person by the name Balak is mentioned on this in line 31.
