history

Balintore Castle from a distance

According to Timothy Pont's map , there was a residential tower called Balintor on the site at the end of the 16th century .

The current castle was designed by architect William Burn in 1859 . The politician David Lyon , who had inherited his family's fortune from investments in the British East India Company , had Balintore Castle built as a hunting lodge . After all, it was only inhabited during the hunting season.

In the 1960s it was decided to repair the extensive damage caused by brown rot and Balintore Castle was given up as a residence. It stood empty until 2007 and during this time it deteriorated so badly that it had to be considered structurally at risk. This is why it has been on the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland since it was introduced in 1990. The county government of Angus used their right of first refusal and acquired the property from the previous owners who were in the Far East. Today it belongs to a Scot who wants to restore it and live in it.

architecture

Balintore Castle is a typical example of the Scottish Baronial Style. It has a large number of towers and gables with tourelles and a bay window that is no longer there. The main tower has a balustraded viewing platform similar to Buchanan Castle .

The inner center is the knight's hall , but there is also a large gallery, sleeping quarters, a serving room, a living room for the female servants, a brush room, a beer cellar, a furniture storage room, a pantry for the butler, a dining room and a library.
