Balkanton is a Bulgarian record label. It was founded in Sofia in 1952 as a state label.

history

Balkanton's factory was equipped for all aspects of record production, from recording and mastering , to pressing the vinyl records, to printing the covers. Multi-channel sound recording was introduced in 1972 with equipment purchased in England. In 1982 Balkanton received its own digital recording equipment. Production reached 9 million units in the mid-1980s. Mainly vinyl records were made , but since 1980 also cassettes. The first CD under the Balkanton label came out in 1988 and was distributed in Bulgaria as well as in Germany and Austria. As the only record manufacturer in the country, Balkanton has built up a rich audio collection over the decades, with recordings by Bulgarian and international artists in a variety of genres - classical music, folk music, light music, pop, but also theater, poetry and more. In the 90s the label was reorganized several times until it was privatized in 1999.

Many of the records produced were or are still available in the countries of the former Eastern Bloc .

present

The 2008 UNESCO conference in Sofia dealt with the Balkans and the subject of intangible cultural heritage. Balkanton is currently releasing some of its old recordings in digital format and is in negotiations with digital distributors such as Amazon, Spotify, Napster, 7digital and others.
