Beam bay

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A beam bay , or bay for short , is a curve of the deck of a ship over its cross-section (i.e. transverse ship). If the middle section is higher than the sides, this is known as a beam bay . If the cross-section is horizontal (the sides are at the same height as the middle section), the deck has no joist bay .

The name goes back to traditional shipbuilding with wooden decks that were laid on arched beams so that water could run off quickly.
