The Lovell family had the castle built. The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland set the year of construction to 1545, although Historic Scotland specifies the 14th or 15th century as the construction period.

At the beginning of the 17th century the property fell to the Maule family , who were named Earls of Panmure in 1646 . The castle is described as a ruin as early as 1682. The remaining walls on the east and south sides of the building were integrated into the stables of Ballumbie House in the 19th century .

Today the castle is still in ruins and in private hands. Public access is not permitted for personal safety reasons. Historic Scotland has listed the ruin as a Category B Historic Building.

The Ballumbie Castle estate is called the Ballumbie Castle Estate . It is separate from the rest of Ballumbie, which was last owned by Robert Williamson of Ballumbie.
