The Schmithof nature reserve is located in the area of ​​the city of Aachen , west of Walheim .

description

The quarry, which is worth protecting, with the associated Schmithof lime kiln is surrounded by oak and hornbeam forests that are rich in species from coppice farming . In some areas the forest is interspersed with shrubbery. The herb layer is rich in species and well developed. Ivy and ringwort dominate here. At the bottom of the quarry is a limestone grassland that is gradually becoming overgrown.

Protection purpose

Here the quarry is to be preserved including the maintenance. The reason for this is the rare plants and endangered animal species such as orchids. The location is important for scientific and geological reasons.
