Ballynaughton

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ballynaughton , also Balinaughton , is a derelict town on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . Ballynaughton was in the south of the island about three kilometers northeast of the Port Ellen ferry terminal and 15 kilometers southeast of Bowmore , the main town on the island. The closest village was the small settlement of Kilbride . In 1841 Ballynaughton still had 38 residents. At the 1851 census there were 34 inhabitants. The ruins preserved today probably date from the early to mid-19th century. Other buildings and field boundaries were already partially derelict at the end of the 19th century. When the village was finally abandoned is not recorded.

Surroundings

There is much evidence of previous settlement in the area around Ballynaughton. A Bronze Age ax was discovered about a kilometer southwest . 200 m to the west are the remains of a cairn . This measured a maximum of 20 m × 16 m and consisted of three chambers. A coin hiding place was found in one of the chambers. A second cairn can be found in a north-easterly direction with a base area of 29 m × 10.5 m. Based on the stone arrangements of the ruinous complexes it can be assumed that the cairn was entered through an entrance in the middle of the front. How many chambers he once owned can no longer be traced today. To the east of Loch Kilbride two menhirs can be found in spatial proximity , which have a maximum height of 2.85 m. A third stone has apparently fallen over and lies flat between the first two. Another standing stone is 200 m south of the desert. With a footprint of 130 cm × 45 cm, it rises about 3.50 m in height and is now integrated into a wall. A second, fallen stone is a few meters away. Standing upright, it would have a height of 3.65 m. A few hundred yards north of Ballynaughton on the edge of a hill are the remains of a fort . This was enclosed by an approximately two meter thick quarry stone wall, which enclosed a trapezoidal area of approximately 20 m × 16 m.
