Baltersan Castle

Baltersan Castle is the ruin of a tower house near the Scottish town of Maybole in the Council Area South Ayrshire . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1995.

history

With Baltersan House , a previous building probably existed on the site of today's Tower House. The owner Lady Row died in 1530. From records it is known that construction of Baltersan Castle began on March 1, 1584. The builder was Laird John Kennedy . It is believed that it was built on the site of Baltersan House, which was previously demolished. Kennedy also owned Greenan Castle on the coast of the Firth of Clyde near Ayr . It is assumed that he used both buildings alternately. Little is known about the history of Baltersan Castle.

Today it is only preserved as a ruin. In 1991 the building was inscribed on the Scotland List of Endangered Structures. Since then there have been plans to convert Baltersan Castle into a luxury residence. Historic Scotland are allocating around £ 500,000 for the restoration. However, the work has not yet started.

description

The building is located off the A77 about one kilometer southwest of Maybole. The three-story sandstone building has an L-shaped floor plan. The masonry is about 1.2 m thick.
