Banana chips

Banana chips are fried or dried banana slices that are often coated with sugar , honey or chocolate .

Deep fried

Usually unripe bananas are sliced, fried in oil and then dried. If necessary, preservatives are added. The chips are crispy and have a sweet taste. These types of banana chips can be very oily because of the deep frying process.

Another form of fried banana chips, usually made in Kerala (India) and also known locally as upperi , are roasted in coconut oil . Both ripe and unripe bananas are used for this shape. Sometimes these shapes are coated with masala or jaggery , so both hot and sweet variants are possible. Such banana chips are an integral part of the traditional Kerala meal ( called Sadya ), which is also celebrated during weddings and traditional festivals such as Onam .

To avoid misunderstandings, it is important to understand the difference between dessert banana and plantain . In Kerala, contrary to all other definitions, plantains are small sweet fruits and dessert bananas are the larger fruits. This is why unripe bananas (the larger fruits) are used in Kerala to make the salted and sweetened crisps. Sometimes ripe plantains (the small, sweeter fruits) are fried to make chips.

Dried

There are also some healthier types of banana chips that are only made by drying . Banana slices that are just being dehydrated are light brown and leathery. These are very sweet and have an intense banana flavor. Ideally, they are made from fully ripe bananas. To make banana chips, you can simply bake banana slices in the oven, although the chips obtained in this way often do not taste very much like banana.

Usage and variations

Banana chips are often part of granola and trail mix .

Other chips, such as B. patacones (singular: patacón ) are salty.

Similar chips can also be made from plantains, the more starchy types of bananas.
