The Banco del Pacífico is one of the largest Ecuadorian banks. It is part of the Grupo Banco del Pacífico together with Banco del Pacífico Panamá , the US subsidiary Pacific National Bank and other companies.
The bank is based in Guayaquil . It was originally founded in 1972 by Marcel Laniado , but had to be rescued by the Ecuadorian state in 1999 due to liquidity problems. The Banco del Pacífico was practically bankrupt, the shares were initially held in trust by Filanbanco , who later also went bankrupt . Numerous irregularities are said to have occurred in these proceedings, which led to various legal proceedings, some of which are still pending. The background to this was the extensive economic and financial crisis in Ecuador, in connection with which, among other things, the country was dollarized . In 2000 the bank was re-established as Nuevo Banco del Pacífico , with Banco del Pacífico and the also insolvent bank Banco Continental being merged.
Since the nationalization, the Ecuadorian state has owned all the shares in this bank, which have been held by the central bank Banco Central del Ecuador since 2001 . The Ecuadorian government announced at the end of September 2007 that it would re-privatize the bank in 2009 after extensive consolidation. Since 2001, the bank's rating has improved from D (“in arrears”) to AA (“safe investment, albeit a slight risk of default”).
Since September 2008, the Banco del Pacífico has been processing the payment of unavailable deposits from customers of the Filanbanco bank , which went bankrupt in the context of a major financial crisis that year since 2001 and which has been in liquidation since then .
