Bandiera rossa
The song Bandiera rossa , often also called Avanti Popolo after its beginning , is one of the most famous international workers' songs and pays homage to the red flag , the symbol of the socialist and later the communist movement. The text was written in 1908 by Carlo Tuzzi , the melody comes from two Lombard folk songs .
In addition to the original Italian version, there are numerous variants that refer to individual socialist or communist parties. The last two lines Evviva il comunismo e la libertà were only added to the originally older song after Mussolini came to power ; at the same time the original beginning of the song Compagni avanti alla riscossa was changed to Avanti o popolo, alla riscossa . In particular, the word comunismo at the end of the refrain is now often replaced by socialismo .
The song has been translated into many languages and has been known in Germany since the 1920s. There are German versions of the text by Walter Dehmel ( Voran, you Arbeitsvolk, you must not give way, / the red flag, that's your symbol! ) And Peter Hacks ( Stand up, you workers, stand up, comrades, / The red flag blows to victory. ), musical variations by Hannes Wader , Konstantin Wecker , Commandantes , Angelic Upstarts and Normahl . In Germany, however, the song is also often sung in the Italian version.
