The bandola is a plucked instrument that is played with a flexible horn plate ( plectrum ). It is mainly found in Venezuela and Colombia and is related to the Spanish bandurria .

The bandola developed from the lute during the time of the Arab occupation of Spain. It has 4, 8, 16 or 18 strings.

The bandola has three main forms:

  • the bandola llanera (4 strings)
  • the bandola andina colombiana (12 to 18 strings)
  • the bandola oriental (8 strings)
