The Bang Pakong Railway Bridge ( Thai สะพาน ข้าม แม่น้ำ บางปะกง ) is a railway bridge on the Chachoengsao Junction – Sattahip railway line and the longest railway bridge in Thailand .
Geographical location
The bridge leads over the Mae Nam Bang Pakong in Chachoengsao and over parts of the city.
history
As early as 1908, the Eastern Railway from Bangkok-Hua Lamphong reached Chachoengsao , with the destination French - Indochina . Further construction initially failed due to the costs of the foreseeable large bridge required here over the Bang Pakong. Even when further construction of the Eastern Railway began in 1922, the expensive crossing of the Bang Pakong was avoided. Rather, the route was further built in a northerly direction, only to make a large arc to the east much further north, but always to stay on the west bank of the river and thus to reach Aranyaprathet . It was not until 1977 that the Thai government decided to connect the railway to the new overseas ports, the Chachoengsao Junction – Sattahip railway line, that bridge construction was inevitable in order to connect to the existing railway network. Construction began in 1981 and was completed in 1984.
