The bank was founded in Zurich in 1836 as the first public limited company in Switzerland. Shares were subscribed by the city and canton of Zurich , among others , but also by other municipalities in Switzerland as well as municipalities and companies abroad. 2000 registered shares at FL 500 each were issued, although not all subscriptions could be taken into account. The President of the Chamber of Commerce, former Mayor Hans Conrad von Murolt, was elected as the first bank president. On November 22nd, the government council approved the final statutes. The bank in Zurich was the first public limited company in Switzerland to come into being.

In 1841, the bank in Zurich took over not only the locked deposits but also open securities accounts for safekeeping and administration. In 1855 the capital was converted from Zurich guilders to Swiss francs.

Until moving into its own bank building in 1875, the bank in Zurich stayed in the building of the guild society “Zur Meise”. That is why it was known by the population as the Meisenbank.

The bank in Zurich took a leading position among the Swiss central banks . In 1892, however, it stopped issuing banknotes. From 1893 to 1905 the bank existed in Zurich as a commercial bank. From May 15, 1899, the bank in Zurich dealt with the direct brokerage of the purchase and sale of securities on the stock exchange.

On January 14, 1905, the bank in Zurich concluded a syndicate of interest with the Schweizerische Kreditanstalt (now Credit Suisse ), which, although the bank in Zurich allowed it to exist as an independent stock corporation, was almost the same as a merger in its effects. In a new contract dated December 20, 1982 with the Schweizerische Kreditanstalt, the bank merged.
