Bannockburn Rotunda

The Bannockburn Rotunda is a memorial in the Scottish city of Stirling in the council area of the same name . In 2004 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

At the site in the former village of Bannockburn , which is now part of Stirling, the decisive battle of the first Scottish War of Independence took place in 1314 with the Battle of Bannockburn . The location of the Borestone , where Robert the Bruce , according to tradition, raised his standard, was marked with a flagpole as early as the 1870s. In 1954 the National Trust for Scotland added a commemorative cairn incorporating fragments of the borestone.

To mark the 650th anniversary of the battle, it was decided to set up a formal memorial to the battle, which was so significant for Scottish history. While Robert Matthew designed the overall concept, H. F. Clark and F. R. Stevenson were responsible for the layout of the park and the architectural work. The equestrian statue of Robert the Bruce, designed by Pilkington Jackson , was unveiled when the facility opened on the anniversary. A visitor center was added later.

description

The memorial is located on the southwestern edge of Stirling. The central element is the broken rotunda , which bears similarities to Neolithic , Scottish henges , but also to Gunnar Asplund's forest cemetery ( Skogskyrkogården ) in Stockholm . The rotunda, made of concrete elements with a wooden bar at the end, encloses the flagpole and the cairn. The two wide openings accommodate the processional path that bends in the rotunda. The path comes from the south-east, from which the English troops historically approached, and ends in the north-west at the bronze statue of Robert the Bruce with another view of Stirling Castle , the destination of the English.
