Not much can be seen of the former royal palace south of Gyeongju today. The extensive earth walls still give an idea of the size of the historical complex. In 1741 a cold store was relocated here from an unknown location, which is probably newer than Banwolseong. However, there were probably older cold stores of this type, historical records indicate that they were used 1000 years earlier during the Silla dynasty. The Banwolseong was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 .

Banwol-seong is located between the central sights and the museum outside. The park-like facility invites South Korean school classes, for whom Gyeongju is a compulsory program, to picnic and play.
