Barão de São João is a Portuguese town and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Lagos . 894 inhabitants lived on a community area of 51.9 km² (as of June 30, 2011).
The zoological garden of Lagos, the Parque Zoológico de Lagos , is located in the municipality.
As part of the regional reform in Portugal on September 29, 2013 , the communities of Barão de São João and Bensafrim were merged to form the new community União das Freguesias de Bensafrim e Barão de São João . Bensafrim became the seat of the municipality, the previous municipal administration in Barão de São João remained as a branch office and citizens' office.
