Barack (first name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first name Barack is the American spelling of the Arabic nameبارك / Bārak meaning "the blessed" or "blessed". The passive form Mubarak is more common in most Arabic-speaking countries .

etymology

The root BRK as a male name with the meaning "blessing" already occurs in Sabaean ( barqak ), Palmyric ( baraq ) and Punic (as a surname of Hamilkar Barkas ). In the Bible , as in modern Hebrew , there is the name Baruch (בָּרוּךְ). “Barack” and “Baruch” are synonymous with the LatinBenedictus ” ( Benedict ).

Barack is not etymologically related to the Arabic nameبرق / Barq ( Semitic root consonant BRQ), which means "lightning" and corresponds to the Hebrew name Barak (בָּרָק).
