Barbara Diethelm (born April 12, 1962 in Zurich ) is a Swiss painter, draftsman and artist's paint producer.

education and study

Colors have accompanied Barbara Diethelm from early childhood and as a child she already developed a sensitivity for color and an appreciation for the material. After attending grammar school in Zurich, she moved to America in 1982. At the SAC in San Antonio she studied graphic design from 1983 to 1985 and fine art with Mel Casas , Mark Pritchett and Tom Willome until 1988 . At the same time, she studied humanities (philosophy) and applied sciences (management) at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. Barbara Diethelm continued her education from 1988 to 1990 by studying painting and printmaking with Sam Tchakalian and Ivan Majdrakoff at the San Francisco Art Institute . During this time she dealt intensively with Far Eastern philosophy and yoga , which from then on is reflected in her artistic work. Her encounter with the artist Agnes Martin in 1992, whom she visited for a long time in Galisteo , New Mexico, left a lasting impression .

Color as a connecting element

Since returning to Switzerland in the early 1990s, she has continued to develop her painterly work in various groups of works. In addition, Barbara Diethelm has been running the family business Lascaux Colors & Restauro since her father's death in 1995. Barbara Diethelm is particularly interested in the development of holistic color systems and in 1996 she developed the Sirius Primary System color system. This extended five-color system has been patented by the European Patent Office. As a painter as well as an artist's paint manufacturer, it is her concern to connect the spiritual-creative and the material-manifest level.

In 2004 she founded the non-profit Foundation Lascaux with her husband, the painter Werner Schmidt .

Artistic work

Familiar with the possibilities of producing colors, Barbara Diethelm's artistic work also revolves around an alchemy of colors: from the material properties of color, its aesthetic aspects to the spiritual powers of color and color dialogues. As Barbara Diethelm put it in an interview, "Everything is a memory of a deeper knowledge, the knowledge of being one with cosmic harmony". In doing so, she wants to "evoke the feeling of harmony and balance that appears when you consider nature".

Since 1985, Barbara Diethelm has regularly exhibited her works in solo and group exhibitions in Switzerland, Italy and the USA.
