Barbara Hirschbichler

Barbara Hirschbichler (born June 26, 1959 ) is a German alpinist and founder of Himalaya-Karakorum-Hilfe eV She is the daughter of mountaineer Albert Hirschbichler .

Life

As a toddler, her mother still carried her through the mountains in a stretcher, her brother Albert later took her with him to rock climbing and when Barbara Hirschbichler read her father Albert Hirschbichler's diaries for the first time at the age of 14, this increased her enthusiasm for the mountains. In 1953, he managed the twelfth ascent of the Eiger north face . In 1959 he was with the first ascent of Batura Sar in the Karakoram died.

From the middle of the eighties she climbed grade VIII , only to increase to grade X over the next few years. She was the first German woman to climb Grade IX + (1989), X− (1993) and X (1994), plus there were other extreme tours in the Alps and the Andes. In between, she reached tenth place at the world championship in sport climbing in Frankfurt in 1991.

In the late 1990s she turned to high-altitude mountaineering. She climbed the sixth highest mountain in the world, Cho Oyu (8201 m) in the Himalayas of Nepal, without Sherpa help, on the normal route (northwest route) with Alexander Huber and two other mountaineers, and in 2000 then the Gasherbrum II (8035 m) Zu During this time, she also began her social commitment in the region by collecting donations to support a Tibetan school.

On December 8th, 2000 she founded the association Himalaya-Karakorum-Hilfe eV Initially, school fees were collected for the Sherpa children, later the construction of water pipes, bridges and hospital wards was supported. In 2007, construction work began on student dormitories and, in 2016, the construction of a student dormitory to enable the students to continue their education. To this end, there are ongoing projects to improve health and food supplies. The club is financially and organizationally supported by well-known personalities, including extreme climber Alexander Huber and songwriters Hans Söllner and Hans Well .

Barbara Hirschbichler has been married to Ghulam Rasool, a former high porter and current head of an expedition agency, since 2002.
