The Barbarakapelle , a memorial located in Quadrath-Ichendorf in the district town of Bergheim, is to stand as a memorial in memory of the lignite opencast mine. The memorial houses a bronze statue of Saint Barbara .

history

The Barbarakapelle, which was built in 1969 in the recultivated forest above what is now the Sonnenhang industrial estate, looks like a tunnel entrance. It was intended to keep alive the memory of the lignite opencast mining that had been in operation there for decades and also to serve as a memorial for the patron saint of miners. The Siegburg artist Ulrich Bliese made the two meter tall statue of Barbara in bronze, which originally held a miner's lamp, but which is missing today. Over time, the chapel was forgotten and deteriorated. In 2005, with the participation of the Quadrath-Ichendorfer History and Local History Association and local craft businesses, a fundamental renovation took place. Inside, a candlestick and a lectern with a blackboard were installed. It reminds of the legend of Barbara, who converted to Christianity and was therefore imprisoned in a tower by her father until she died. Two boulders from the Inden opencast mine were also set up outside the chapel to point the way to the chapel. The chapel is closed by an artistically designed iron grille in the form of crosses.
