The witch judge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The witch judge is a 12-page comic by the illustrator Luisa Preißler from 2011, which was created as a bachelor thesis in the media production course at the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences .

It appeared in the horror shocker series of the Weissblech-Verlag and is a fictional story about the historical person of Hermann Cothmann , the “witch mayor of Lemgo ”. The background to the “witch judge” was researched, written and illustrated over a period of eight weeks, and at the end the bachelor thesis was rated 1.0. It is based on the witch madness of the city of Lemgo in the 17th century and on the real person of Hermann Cothmann, who as mayor of the city of Lemgo was notorious for his witch hunts and his role in the witch trials. In the city of Lemgo, he led to a lively discussion as to whether narrative patterns that real people use in fictional stories represent a worthy handling of the history of the city of Lemgo. For this purpose, a special exhibition called “Witches' persecution in Lemgo. Historical reality and literary-artistic fantasies ”came into being.

action

1682. The city of Lemgo has become addicted to witchcraft. Nobody is safe from the stake any more. Anyone who is considered a witch is a witch. Intrigue, arbitrariness and cruelty rule. The rule is a man whose terror regime is nourished by the fear of the citizens. A heartless person who has absolute power over life and death. But everything seems to change when he hires a pretty young housekeeper and his regime of fire starts to falter. Will he keep control or is this the end of the Lemgo witch judge?

publication

The comic was published in 2012 in the “Horrorschocker” magazine series by Weissblech-Verlag. According to the publisher's director Levin Kurio, due to the regional excitement, this was the publisher's most successful publication from 2011 to '13.

reception

The culture committee of the city of Lemgo dubbed the comic "sexist", "misogynist" and "poorly historically researched". After an article in the Lippische Landeszeitung a lively discussion arose. This can also be traced back to the comment from the author of the newspaper article, Dieter Asbrock, who strongly criticized the city of Lemgo in it. He describes the culture committee as "hypocritical" and expresses doubts that the critics have even read Preissler's comic. In the reader comments, too, political interference is mainly criticized. Splashcomics attests that the comic has an "extremely complex structure in which the author Luisa Preissler takes her time" and continues: "The depiction of the burning of the witches is particularly successful, where the illustrator provides a wonderful play of light and shadow due to the glow of the fire."

filming

Even before the debate in spring 2013, the film producer Tobias Leveringhaus, who grew up in Lemgo, came across the comic in May 2012 and convinced Preißler to film the comic with his company Sodawasser Productions as a real adaptation. To this end, he launched a crowdfunding campaign, which was successfully completed at the end of January 2013.

In May 2013, the production company Sodawasser Productions announced that the film would be funded by the Film- und Medienstiftung and thus also produced. The shooting should take place in January 2014 in Lemgo and Cologne. Anne Maschlanka is directing the book and Alexander Daus wrote the book. With the help of visual effects, the medieval city of Lemgo is to be recreated on the computer. Another special feature of the film will be that the making of the film can be followed live on the Internet.
