Bargur or Baragur ( Tamil பர்கூர் , Kannada ಬರಗೂರು ) is a Zebu breed from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

description

The cattle breed comes from the mountain area around Bargur in the Erode district near the border between the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka . There the animals are mainly kept by the local Kannada- speaking Lingayat minority. The animals are of compact build and of medium size and, as calves, are red in color, which changes to brown at a later age, with individual white spots. They are considered semi-wild, unruly and not easy to keep. The height at the withers of the bulls and cows averages 119 cm and 115 cm, the length 114 cm / 114 cm and the chest circumference 119 cm / 124 cm. The cattle typically graze outdoors in the forest and are only driven back into the villages during the harvest season in January, where they are fed with straw or graze in the harvested fields.

The milk yield of the cows is low and is only about 0.5 to 3.0 liters per day and calf. The bulls are valued as draft animals because of their endurance. The manure is also used as a valuable fertilizer. The number of animals has decreased by an estimated 90 percent since 1980 to less than 10,000 in 2009. Restricted grazing rights in the mountain forests were named as the main reason for this. In January 2015, the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University announced that a research station would be set up to preserve the rare breed.
