history

The Barkhausen Tower is the last remnant of a monastery property that was dependent on the Georgenthal Monastery in the abandoned town of Barkhausen, which was located about one kilometer to the north. The estate at the place mentioned in 1189 as Barchusen was farmed by Cistercians until the 14th century . After the residents of the village had moved away and Landgrave Friedrich II had given permission to demolish the monastery courtyard, farmers from Udstedt bought land and formed a cooperative, “the Barkhausen trade”. The Barkhausen Hegegericht had the task of ensuring compliance with the trade regulations and held a public court at the tower on Pentecost Tuesdays for centuries. The first known court order is from 1415. The court had its last session on June 3, 1873. Meetings afterwards were no longer held as court sessions, but as celebrations. The Barkhäuser Tower was important as part of the outer fortifications of the city of Erfurt. Before 1900 the tower was provided with an emergency roof made of zinc sheet, the diameter of the round tower was determined at the top with a clearance of 2 m , all wooden components and fixtures had been lost. The tower was badly damaged by vandalism and a storm in 1913 and was restored in the autumn of the same year. In 1985, at the instigation of the LPG, the tower roof was renovated, the external plaster was renewed and a weather vane was installed. In 1998 the tower was reconstructed and its surroundings were prepared.

Today the tower is listed as a cultural monument .
