The Barnafoss (Eng. "Children's Waterfall") is a waterfall on the Hvítá River near the town of Húsafell . It is located in the municipality of Borgarbyggð .
Surname
The name Barnafoss refers to an old legend. When the residents of the Hraunsás farm went to the Christmas mass, they left two children behind. When they returned, the children were gone, but their trail led to the river. They are said to have crashed from a natural stone arch, fell into the Hvítá River and drowned. The mother then had the stone arch destroyed so that a similar tragedy could no longer occur.
geography
The Barnafoss is located in the immediate vicinity of the Hraunfossar , north of the Ok volcano and south of the Hallmundarhraun .
The water jet in the waterfall is interesting: Much of the water shoots through a hole at remarkable speed. There are considerable thundering rapids.
A pedestrian bridge crosses the foaming river Hvítá in the small gorge. From here you can see the waterfall and the Hraunfossar very well .
