Barneo (2008)

Barneo ( Russian Барнео ) is an annual research camp that has been operated by the Russian Geographical Society on the pack ice near the geographic North Pole since 2002 . The warehouse opens in late March or early April and lasts about a month.

Barneo is the world's northernmost research camp and is usually less than 100 km from the geographic North Pole. Barneo's coordinates are not stable because of ice drift . In April 2007, the camp was approximately 89 ° 31 '30 "  N , 30 ° 27' 0"  W .

In April 2016, the Chechen special forces Kadyrowzy , who are under the direct command of Ramzan Akhmatovich Kadyrov , used the research camp for military exercises. The Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen served as a stopover for the passenger and material transport, which due to the demilitarization of Svalbard was controversial. In 2019 there were again reports of Russian units in the camp.
