Award

The title was created on August 26, 1892 for the House of Commons William Tyssen-Amherst . Since he had seven daughters but no son, the title was given to him with the special addition that in the absence of direct male descendants, he could also be passed on to his eldest daughter Mary and her male descendants. Mary was married to Lord William Cecil, a younger son of William Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Exeter . Today's title holder is their great-great-great-grandson Hugh Cecil as 5th Baron.
