Earl of Castlehaven
Earl of Castlehaven was a hereditary title in the Peerage of Ireland . The title was named after the Irish community Castlehaven in County Cork , which today consists of Union Hall and Castletownshend .
Awards
The title was created on September 6, 1616 for George Tuchet, 11th Baron Audley . Together with the Earldom he was also awarded the title Baron Audley of Orier in the Peerage of Ireland . In 1563 he had inherited the titles 11th Baron Audley and 8th Baron Tuchet , created in the Peerage of England in 1313 and 1403, respectively, from his father .
The 2nd Earl was executed for sodomy in 1631 and his English titles were revoked. His son, the 3rd Earl, was bestowed the title of Baron Audley of Hely on June 3, 1633, with precedent for his grandfather in the Peerage of England . When this award seemed insufficient to replace the titles that had been revoked from his father, they were restored to him in 1678. Ironically, he was expelled from the House of Lords in the Test Act that same year for being a Catholic .
The earldom and the baronies of 1616 and 1633 expired when the 8th Earl died on April 22, 1777.
