Earl of Cromartie is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of Scotland and in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . The title is named after the traditional Scottish county of Cromartyshire .

The earl is the hereditary chief of Clan MacKenzie . The Earls family seat is Castle Leod near Dingwall in Ross-shire .

Awards

The title was created on January 1, 1703 in the Peerage of Scotland for George Mackenzie, 1st Viscount of Tarbat . Along with the earliest dignity, he was awarded the subordinate title Viscount of Tarbat and Lord Macleod and Castlehaven . As early as April 15, 1685, the titles Viscount of Tarbat and Lord Macleod and Castlehaven had been awarded to him. His grandson, the 3rd Earl, supported the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 and led 400 men from the Clan Mackenzie in the victorious battle of Falkirk in 1746 . He was eventually captured and convicted of high treason. His titles of nobility were stripped from him.

The title was recreated on October 21, 1861 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom for Anne Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, Duchess of Sutherland , nee Hay-Mackenzie, as Countess Cromartie . She was a great-great-granddaughter of the 3rd Earl of the First Order and married to George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 3rd Duke of Sutherland . Along with the Earldom, she was awarded the subordinate titles Viscountess Tarbat , of Tarbat in the County of Cromartie, Baroness MacLeod , of Castle Leod in the County of Cromartie, and Baroness Castlehaven , of Castlehaven in the County of Cromartie. The titles were bestowed with the special addition that after the death of the Countess it should fall to her second-born son Lord Francis Leveson-Gower and after him to his male descendants; in the event of their extinction to possible further younger sons of the Countess and their male descendants; in the absence of such, to descendants of the said Lord Francis Leveson-Gower and, after him, those of his possible younger brothers (thus also in the female line); in the absence of such, to her daughter Lady Florence Leveson-Gower and her descendants; and finally to other daughters of the Countess. According to a special addition, her son Francis followed her as 2nd Earl in 1714. With his death in 1731 he left no sons, so that the title in Abeyance fell between his two daughters, which was ended in 1895 in favor of the older of the two as 3rd Countess. The current title holder is John Mackenzie as 5th Earl.
