Baron Berners
Baron Berners is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .
Award and history of the title
The title was created on May 26, 1455 for Sir John Bourchier when he was appointed to the House of Lords by Writ of Summons . As Barony by writ , the title can also be inherited in the female line if there are no sons. However, unlike with brothers, the principle of primogeniture does not apply between several sisters . Since the title can neither be shared nor held together, the title falls into a state of rest ( Abeyance ) if there are no sons but several daughters. Anyone with co-authorization can then apply to the Krone to end the suspension.
When the 2nd Baron died, the title fell for the first time in Abeyance between his two daughters. When the older of them, Mary Unton, died around 1550, the barony de iure became her sister Jane Knyvett's sole heir. However, she and her male descendants never effectively claimed the title. At the death of her great-great-great-great grandson, the de iure 7th baron, the title fell again in Abeyance between his two sisters in 1693 and fell to the younger than de iure 7th baroness at the death of the older sister's only son in 1711 . She too has never effectively claimed the title. When she died childless in 1743, the title fell in Abeyance between the two daughters of her cousin John Knyvet († 1731). On May 7, 1832, a grandson of the older of these obtained the restoration of the title for himself as 9th Baron. On his death on March 25, 1838, the title fell briefly again in Abeyance and a few days later on April 2, 1838, his brother was restored as the 10th baron. When the 15th baroness died on August 2, 1927, the title fell in Abeyance between her two daughters and was restored on June 30, 1995 for the elder as the 16th baroness.
Another title
Before the later 13th Baron inherited the barony from his mother in 1917, he had inherited the title (4th) Baronet , of Stanley Hall in the County of Shropshire, from his father in 1894 . This title had been bestowed on October 3, 1808 in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom to his great-grandfather, the House of Commons Thomas Tyrwhitt Jones . The baronetcy could only be inherited in the male line and expired in 1950 with the death of his nephew, the 14th baron.
