Hans Herbert Keuth (born December 4, 1940 in Moers ) is a German philosopher . He was a professor of philosophy at the University of Tübingen .

Keuth first studied economics and received his doctorate in 1970 with a thesis on the logic of norms in science and sociology . In 1976 he completed his habilitation at the University of Mannheim . His academic teacher there was Hans Albert . In 1979 he took over a professorship for scientific theory in Tübingen.

In his habilitation thesis, published under the title Reality and Truth , Keuth subjected Karl Popper's conception of realism and his theory of truth to a thorough criticism. In particular, it is directed against Popper's thesis that Alfred Tarski rehabilitated the correspondence theory of truth for science. In Keuth's view, Tarski's explication in no way reveals how Popper can finally speak of "truth" as the "correspondence of statements with the facts they describe". In addition, Keuth criticized Popper's theory of truthfulness and his 3-worlds theory .

In science and value judgment as well as in knowledge or decision Keuth criticized the critical theory , especially the theses represented by Jürgen Habermas , and defended the positions of Max Weber and Popper on the other hand . He also turned against the idea advocated by Karl-Otto Apel and Wolfgang Kuhlmann that a philosophical ultimate justification was possible. Following Albert, Keuth argued for an epistemic skepticism and fallibilism .

With The Philosophy of Karl Poppers , Keuth finally gave a comprehensive introduction to Popper's philosophical legacy.
