Baron Chetwode , of Chetwode in the County of Buckingham , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was conferred on Field Marshal Sir Philip Walhouse Chetwode, 7th Baronet , on July 10, 1945 . He had achieved great success as a cavalry general in the First World War on the Palestine Front and then rose to the position of Commander in Chief of the British Indian Army .

The first baron already belonged to the gentry as the 7th baronet , of Oakley in the County of Stafford . The title of baronet, which belongs to the Baronetage of England , had been bestowed on John Chetwode, an ancestor of the first baron, in 1700. It is now listed as a subordinate title of the Barony.
