Frederick Millar, 1st Baron Inchyra

Frederick Robert Hoyer Millar, 1st Baron Inchyra GCMG CVO ( June 6, 1900 - October 16, 1989 ) was a British diplomat.

Life

Millar attended Wellington College , Berkshire, and then studied at New College at the University of Oxford . After graduating from university, he entered the diplomatic service in 1923. He went through a career at the embassies in Berlin , Paris and Cairo and from 1934 on the personal staff of the British Foreign Minister . During the Second World War and then until 1950 he was employed at the embassy in Washington .

Subsequently, Millar represented the United Kingdom in the North Atlantic Council until 1953 . In the last year he succeeded Sir Ivone Kirkpatrick as the last British High Commissioner of the Allied High Commission and then until 1956 Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany . On his return to London, Millar became a permanent secretary of state in the Foreign Office until his retirement in 1962 .

After his retirement, Millar was raised to hereditary nobility as Baron Inchyra of St Madoes in the County of Perth. From 1962 to 1975 he served as King of Arms of the Order of St. Michael and St. George , of which he had been a member since 1949.

Millar married Elizabeth de Marees van Swinderland from the Netherlands in 1931. The couple had two sons and two daughters. When Millar died in 1989 at the age of 89, his older son Robert inherited his title.
