Earl of Gowrie
Earl of Gowrie is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of Scotland and the Peerage of the United Kingdom . The title is named after a region in Scotland , the center of which is the city of Perth .
The respective earl is the hereditary chief of Clan Ruthven .
Awards
The title was first created in 1581 for William Ruthven, 4th Lord Ruthven , in the Peerage of Scotland. He was an important courtier of his time and involved in many intrigues at the Scottish court. Before he was executed for high treason in 1584 , the title was stripped from him. Two years later, his son was reinstated in the title. The dignity expired in 1600 with the death of the third earl and was also revoked posthumously for high treason.
The second award took place in 1945 to Alexander Hore-Ruthven, 1st Baron Gowrie , in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He had been Governor of Australian states and eventually Governor General of Australia , having previously served as an officer in the British Army .
Subordinate title
The respective earl of the first award carried the title of Lord Ruthven , created on January 29, 1488 in the Peerage of Scotland , which had been bestowed on the great-grandfather of the first earl. It also went out in 1600.
The first earl of the second award had been raised to Baron Gowrie , of Canberra in the Commonwealth of Australia , and of Dirleton in the County of East Lothian in 1935. Simultaneously with the earliest title, he was awarded the title of Viscount Ruthven of Canberra , of Dirleton in the County of East Lothian.
His grandson, the second Earl, finally inherited the title Baron Ruthven of Gowrie , of Gowrie in the County of Perth, created in 1919 from his great-uncle in 1956 . All of these titles also belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The title heir carries the courtesy title Viscount Ruthven of Canberra .
