George Elphinstone, 1st Viscount Keith

Baron Keith was a hereditary British title of nobility created once in the Peerage of Ireland and twice in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Awarding and other titles

All three awards were made to the same person, namely the Admiral and Member of the House of Commons George Elphinstone , a younger son of the 10th Lord Elphinstone .

In his first bestowal on March 16, 1797 in the Peerage of Ireland the title Baron Keith , of Stonehaven Marrischal, bestowed, with a special note in favor of his daughter from his first marriage and her male offspring. On December 15, 1801, he was raised in the second bestowal in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Baron Keith , of Stonehaven Marischal in the County of Kincardine , without special notes. On September 17, 1803, he was awarded the third title of Baron Keith , of Banheath in the County of Dumbarton , in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , again with a special note in favor of his daughter from his first marriage and her male descendants. On June 1, 1814, he was also raised to Viscount Keith .

When he died on March 10, 1823, the Viscountcy and the Barony of 1801 expired, the Baronies of 1797 and 1803 fell to his daughter Margaret Keith as 2nd Baroness. In 1837 she also inherited the title 7th Lady Nairne . Her baronies Keith finally expired on her death on November 11th 1867, the Lordship Nairne fell to her daughter Emily Petty-Fitzmaurice, 8th Lady Nairne .
