Baron Monthermer
Baron Monthermer was a hereditary title in the Peerage of England that was created twice.
Awards
The title was first bestowed on March 4, 1309 when King Edward II called his brother-in-law Ralph de Monthermer to Parliament through a Writ of Summons . He was the widower of his sister Johanna von Akkon, who died in 1307 .
Ralph de Monthermer left two sons, the older one, Thomas de Monthermer , inherited his father's baron title in 1325, the younger Edward de Monthermer was also appointed to Parliament in 1326 by Writ of Summons, which established a second Monthermer Barony. Since Edward died childless, the barony's second bestowal expired with his death around 1340.
The baron title first bestowed fell after the death of the 7th baron in 1471 in Abeyance and is still in this state today. Most recently, in 1928 and 1874, descendants of the title holders tried unsuccessfully to end their Abeyance.
Other titles
The 4th baron first bestowal also inherited the title of 3rd Earl of Salisbury in 1397 and henceforth led the barony as a subordinate title.
