Duke of Montagu was a hereditary British title of nobility that was created once each in the Peerage of England and in the Peerage of Great Britain .

Awards

The title was first bestowed on April 14, 1705 for Ralph Montagu, 1st Earl of Montagu . Together with the Dukedom he was awarded the subordinate title of Marquess of Monthermer . On April 9, 1689 he had already been awarded the titles of Earl of Montagu and Viscount Monthermer , of Monthermer, in the County of Essex. On January 10, 1683, he had also inherited the title of 3rd Baron Montagu , of Boughton in the County of Northampton , from his father, which had been created for his grandfather on June 29, 1621. All of these titles belonged to the Peerage of England and expired on the death of his third-born youngest son, the 2nd Duke, on July 16, 1749.

The second bestowal of the title was created on November 5, 1766 for George Montagu, 4th Earl of Cardigan . Together with the Dukedom he was awarded the subordinate title of Marquess of Monthermer . On August 21, 1786 he was also given the title of Baron Montagu , of Boughton in the County of Northampton. All of these titles belonged to the Peerage of Great Britain. On July 5, 1732, he had inherited the title of Earl of Cardigan from his father , which was created on April 20, 1661 in the Peerage of England. Since the only son of the 1st Duke died before his father, the Dukedom and Marquessate became extinct when he died on May 23, 1790. The Earldom fell to James Brudenell, 1st Baron Brudenell of Deene (1725-1811). The barony of Montagu fell due to a special note when it was bestowed on the son of the daughter of the 1st duke Henry James Montagu-Scott (1776–1845) and did not expire until his death on October 30, 1845.
