Baron Saye and Sele
Baron Saye and Sele is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .
Award
The barony was created in February 1447 by Letters patent for the politician and military officer James Fiennes . Accordingly, the title could only be inherited in the male line. His grandson, the 3rd baron, was never called to parliament and the title does not seem to have been claimed by his descendants up to the 6th baron either. Only the 7th baron claimed the title in 1573. He was only successful in 1603 when King James I confirmed his title in 1603 with a letter of patent. He confirmed the title created in 1447, but with the stipulation that it should not be considered to have been created until 1603 with regard to the protocolary ranking . Due to the erroneous assumption that the barony of 1447 was by writ Having been created, he also confirmed the corresponding possibility of inheritance in the female line.
The 8th Baron was raised to Viscount Saye and Sele on July 7, 1624 in the Peerage of England . At the death of his son, the 2nd Viscount, on March 15, 1674, the two titles separated. The Viscountcy fell to his nephew William Fiennes , the barony, however, fell in Abeyance between his two daughters, the Hon. Elizabeth Twisleton and the Hon. Frances Ellis. The Viscountcy finally expired with the death of the 6th Viscount on July 29, 1781.
In 1715 all but one co-heiresses of the barony had died, namely Cecil Twisleton, the daughter of the aforementioned Elizabeth Twisleton. As a result, she was de iure 10th Baroness Saye and Sele, although it was not until 1781 that her great-grandson had the Abeyance formally terminated and the title of 13th Baron was legally confirmed. Several of his descendants added or changed their surnames with reference to their ancestors in the female line; the current title holder is his descendant Nathaniel Fiennes as the 21st Baron.
