William Fiennes, 2nd Baron Saye and Sele

William Fiennes, 2nd Baron Saye and Sele (* 1428 , † 14. April 1471 ) was an English nobleman .

Life

William Fiennes was an English nobleman and soldier who fought in the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of the Roses . Under King Henry VI. William Fiennes was appointed to Parliament twice and was awarded the position of Knight of the Body . and was appointed Privy Counselor . He was sent to France by the king and served in the English army from 1452 to 1460.

In the course of the Wars of the Roses William Fiennes changed sides and fought for the House of York in July 1460 at the Battle of Northampton , in February 1461 at the Second Battle of St Albans . and in March 1461 in the decisive victory at the Battle of Towton . at the side of Edward, Earl of March, later Edward IV.

After Edward IV's coronation in 1461, William Fiennes was appointed Constable of Porchester Castle , Constable of Pevensey Castle and Keeper of the new forests . He was also promoted to Vice Admiral under Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick .

When Edward IV was forced to flee into exile in Flanders in the autumn of 1470 , William Fiennes accompanied his king. The following year, William Fiennes returned to England in the wake of Edward IV and a small army.

William Fiennes, 2nd Baron Saye and Sele, died on April 14, 1471 at the Battle of Barnet . He was buried in the church of St Thomas' Hospital, Southwark London .

William Fiennes's parents were James Fiennes, 1st Baron Saye and Sele and Emmeline Cromer of Willingham.

Marriage and offspring

William Fiennes was married to Margaret, daughter of William Whickham. He had three children with her:

  • Henry Fiennes, 3rd Baron Saye and Sele;
  • Richard Fiennes, 4th Baron Saye and Sele;
  • John Fiennes.
