The Battle of Barnet took place as part of the Wars of the Roses on April 14, 1471 between Edward IV and Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick , and ended with a victory for Edward.

Course of the battle

The battle was ultimately decided by a fatal error: right at the beginning, the Earl of Oxford's contingent fighting for Lancaster had overrun the left wing of the Yorkists and driven them back to Barnet , but none of the other participants in the battle noticed this because of the thick fog. When Oxford's men returned to the battlefield from Barnet, Warwick's men confused their emblem, the standard, a silver star, with the " Sun of York ", that of the opposing army under Edward IV, and attacked the allies. The resulting shambles were used by the now newly formed enemy to attack. Warwick was killed and his troops smashed.

Effects of the battle

Before the army of the Earl of Warwick and the troops of Queen Margaret , wife of Henry VI , who had just landed in England . , was able to unite, it was provided by Edward IV's army and defeated despite being outnumbered. With Warwick's death, the House of Lancaster lacked the influential and popular strategic head of the "kingmaker". So it was easier for the Yorkists to defeat Margaret's army at Tewkesbury three weeks later .

Commemoration
