The Battle of Ludlow (also: Battle of the Bridge of Ludford ) was the most significant defeat of the Yorkists at the beginning of the Wars of the Roses .
prehistory
After winning the Battle of Blore Heath , the Yorkists marched on Worcester . But when they encountered a strong Lancastrian army , they holed up by the Ludford Bridge. Ludford is a small village outside Ludlow , both only separated by the River Teme.
Course of the battle
On October 12, 1459, Sir Andrew Trollope , the commanding officer of the Calais contingent , changed sides. King Henry VI. had offered him pardon. Trollope brought not only his men, but valuable information about the Yorkists' plans and army. Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York , was now faced with a superiority of three to one. That evening, he and his two sons decided to flee the battlefield along with Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick , and Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury . Richard Neville of Salisbury, and Eduard , Richard Plantagenet's eldest son, retired to Calais, he himself with the others to Dublin in Ireland , where he was followed by his second son, Edmund , who was only 16 years old , seriously injured. When the Yorkist Army realized that it was leaderless that morning, it broke up. The Lancastrian army then plundered Ludlow, which was now unprotected and sympathetic to the House of York.
