Bořek Šípek (born June 14, 1949 in Prague ; † February 13, 2016 there ) was a Czech architect, furniture designer and glass artist.

Life

Bořek Šípek studied furniture design from 1964 to 1968 at the Prague School of Applied Arts. In 1968 he emigrated from what was then socialist Czechoslovakia to Germany. He studied architecture at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and philosophy at the University of Stuttgart . From 1977 to 1979 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Industrial Design at the University of Hanover . After his doctorate in architecture at the Technical University of Delft in 1979, he was a lecturer in design theory at the University of Essen until 1983 .

In 1983 he moved to Amsterdam and founded his own architecture and design office, and later the Alterego design company with David Palterer . In 1989 he founded an art studio in Prague. From 1990 to 1998 he was professor of architecture and design at the Academy for Art, Architecture and Design in Prague , and then taught at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna . From 2005 to 2012 he was professor and dean of the Faculty of Art and Architecture at the Technical University of Liberec .

Šípek had three sons, two with the English choreographer Bambi Uden and one with the Czech singer Leona Machálková.

Act

He was best known for his furniture designs and glass art, including for the Ajeto company in Nový Bor . His work received worldwide attention and can be found in permanent exhibitions in museums in New York, Amsterdam, Paris, London, Seoul, Beirut, Tokyo and Bangkok.

According to his plans, the opera house in Kyoto , Japan, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Museum Het Kruithuis in 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands from 1993 to 2002 were realized as an architect . In 1995 the boutique was designed by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld in Paris. He planned an exhibition pavilion in Wolfsburg for the automobile manufacturer Škoda. For more than ten years he worked on behalf of President Václav Havel as the main architect of Prague Castle , primarily for the restoration of the interior.

In 1983 he received the German Architecture Prize for his work. In 1993 he received the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Prijs . In 1991 he was appointed Knight of the French Order of Art and Literature ( Ordre des Arts et des Lettres ).

His credo was "form follows poetry".
